Type a code, get the full caption.
CaptionID names people from a roster file rather than from a face, so it needs no indexing and it works on a helmet. Both paths write the same IPTC fields, and both can be used on the same photo.

Tag photos with a roster file
For people you have not indexed. Names come from a roster file instead of face recognition.
- Open the folder you want to tag. Everything below happens without leaving Browse.Press and hold to enlarge
- Select Roster at the top. Pick a saved roster, upload your own, or build one from the GalleryID feed. If you upload your own file, column A is the short code and must be unique, and on duplicates the first match wins.Press and hold to enlarge
- Select the photos to apply metadata to and press ⌘I to open the IPTC editor. Click into a field, then click a token on the right. Person Name inserts whoever you tag, and the long-form tokens add lines like “Elena Castillo #23 of State University.” Apply, then save and close.Press and hold to enlarge
- Back in Browse, select a photo and press I or the spacebar. IPTC fields sit on the left, CaptionID roster buttons under the thumbnail. Click a person and their name fills the fields where you placed a token. Save, or move to the next photo. Closing with unsaved edits asks first.Press and hold to enlarge
Short codes work anywhere too: type the delimiter, the code, then the delimiter again to pull column B. Add #2 before the closing delimiter for column C, #3 for column D, and so on. With several people tagged, names join naturally. Two are joined with “and,” three or more use commas with “and” before the last.

The same people onto a run of frames in one pass, with per-photo exceptions.
- Select a run of frames in Browse and press ⌘T, or right-click and choose Tag people…. Every selected frame is listed on the left with its thumbnail; the folder’s roster is on the right. Search by name, jersey number or short code.Press and hold to enlarge
- Picking someone queues them onto every selected frame, shown as a pending chip on each one. Click a chip to leave that person off that frame — the four-captains except-two case. The checkbox, the thumbnail or the filename drops a whole frame out, and hovering a thumbnail enlarges it, which is the only way to tell apart a burst of near-identical frames.Press and hold to enlarge
A folder with both a roster file and a MatchID scope gets an IPTC roster / MatchID roster toggle, the same control the photo window has; with one source there is nothing to toggle. Tag the same person from both sides and they are written once — matching is by name, so it also skips anyone already tagged on that frame from the other roster. Common codes sit under whichever roster is showing, and a code is frozen as it reads when you pick it, so editing the code set later never rewrites photos you already tagged.
It writes tags, never captions. Your fields fill from the folder’s template exactly as if you had tagged each frame by hand, so opening one afterwards with I and removing a person recomputes the caption. Names already on a frame are shown too — click one to remove that tag. Nothing is written until Apply, so additions and removals land together. If the folder’s template has no person tokens there is nothing for a name to resolve into, and the modal says so rather than tagging silently.
